Obama's Concern for Educational Funding

At the recent annual meeting for the National Governors Association, Obama shared his input on educational budget, "Obama Urges Governors to Boost Education Funding" . Explaining the importance of educaton, Obama states,
“Nothing more clearly signals what you value as a state than the decisions you make about where to invest. Budgets are about choices".
Although, he believes that the states should not be cutting resources to school's, he did alter the requirements for the No Child Left Behind Act for ten states this year. By wavering the toughest standards that the states should meet, this permits them to cutting budgets from schools. If states still had to meet those requirements they would feel obligated to obtain the desired results, and it would be harder to cut budgets within the schools.

Higher education is also being effected by these budget cuts, 40 states have already decreased their funding towards colleges and universities, leaving the tuition increased for attending students. Although, I do agree with Obama's opinion that states should not be cutting budgets from schools, he believes it is going to effect the Unites States' rank against other countries. He explains,
"The countries who out-educate us today will out-compete us tomorrow. If we want America to continue to be number one and stay number one, we’ve got some work to do".

  1. Well one problem I know allot about is the need for pension reform in public schools. Now don't get me wrong, teachers deserve to be payed well for what they do, but there is a limit. For example in the Providence, RI school district, a teacher retires with starting benefits of 75% of their last paycheck, which, for a fully tenured (10 years) teacher is 80k a year. This includes cost of living expenses, which works out so that after 7 years of retirement a retired teacher will be making more then they were when they were working. Oh and did I mention this doesn't include the cost of full healthcare coverage? All of which comes right out of the local governments pockets. And THAT is why our schools have no money.

  2. Really??? I find that crazy that the teachers are being paid that much when they are retired. I believe that they should be making some money, but not that much. Especially if it is more then what they were making teaching.
