Public Killings

After the Virginia Tech incident you would hope that security becomes much stricter within schools and other public places. Unfortunately there was another shooting very close to here in Keene. A roommate shot his roommate then killed himself. I feel that they need to make it much more difficult for people to get guns by doing this I feel it would help tremendously with the amount of killing. I was just wondering how everyone else felt and if there are any other ideas of how to make sure somehting like this do not happen again.

I feel there are a number of different things that can be done in order to help prevent shootings before they happen. I feel that the accessability of fire arms is a problem. There are hundreds of different stores in New Hampshire where someone could purchuse a fire arm. Walmart, Kmart, local gun stores. I feel that the government should put restrictions on the number of locations that have permits to sell guns. By doing this it will allow the government to properly monitor the quality of the establishments selling fire arms. I feel the next solution to controlling the voilent acts involving fire arms is to educate the public. Currently it is not required that you take a class regarding a weapon if you want to purchuse it. I feel that if the government requires a safety and awareness class when buying a fire arm it will bring awareness to proper use of those fire arms. It is tragic that these students have been killed by the misuse of a weapon. but if they were all killed by bows and arrows would there be an out cry to ban bows and arrows.

I feel that we have plenty of gun laws, it’s just the people who are using them to harm others are the mentally unstable. If a person wants to buy a gun they should have a mental health check by a hospital before buying the gun. If they pass tests which would be standardized in all hospitals around the country, then they should be allowed to buy a gun. Furthermore, maybe every six months be checked up on to make sure that they haven’t made an criminal acts with or without any weapon and still have the knowledge of the gun. Also they could take classes with a professional on how to use the gun. Then after so many classes they would train outdoors with the people on how to use the gun, clean it, etc. I think if people had to go through all this to just get a gun, people would reconsider about getting one. And the people who want to really use it would go through the steps in order to get one.
I think we should have just one place to buy guns. So that we know that the people who use them get them from one source and then the government can monitor that corporation and who is buying the guns and can do background checks on the people. If you’re buying the gun for hunting or for a recreational activity then having the government doing a background check should be fine.
I know people who use guns to hunt or for other recreational activities will complain but what else can we do? We can’t ban guns because then it will increase the want of guns in the black market. And it would create the new battle, the ‘war on guns.’ For example the war on drugs, you can clearly see by creating this, it has driven people to new ways of getting/making it, selling it and using it.
Overall of we did these measures in the first place we could have saved thousands of lives maybe even millions. So I think the government needs to pass not more laws but on who can purchase a gun and have them be educated on using it.

I would like to say that this country has gun laws and they are good gun laws. They could use minor tweeks. Like srgis said its the people taht use them. the famous saying is more true now then ever guns don't kill people kill people. We know that the guns used in the VT shooting were pourchased legally but was the gun from the Keene shooting done the same? Most of the time guns are that purchased illigally are the ones that end up being used in crimes. The only way i would support a tougher gun laws was only if they introducted it on hand guns. Rifles are very practical for people all over the country. Hunting and high power target shooting are done all over the country as well as in competitions. Guns are good it's the people that are behind them that give them there bad names.

I agree with EvilJon as well. Its not that gun laws are not strict, instead its just the few psychos that get their hands on them that shouldnt cause us all of the problems. They could be completely stable at the time of purchase, and then sometime down the road just lose it. There is no telling what every individual is going to do when they own a gun. The government does what they can and the rest has to be left in the people's hands.
One thing I will say as, as I have mentioned in prior bolgs, is that no one should ever be able to posess a gun just by doing paper work. You should have to take a class in order to own a pistol, and learn how to shoot it. FIlling out a bunch of forms for the governemnt to check out your criminal hstroy is simply not enough. I would say if that one problem were fixed, we would be much better off.
