Political Parties and Interest Groups Response to article
After reading the article that Dr. Fistek and Dr. Egbert posted, I have a few questions. I was first wondering why NH is always so important during election time. Being such a small state, with no major importing or exporting, why is our particular vote so important? Is it because we are always undecided and no one ever knows which party we will side with? Also, the artciale sates that NH's majority party is the Democrats. It then goes onto say that the party is probably going to change soon again. Why would this be???

Reasons why New Hampshire is so important and first. New Hampshire passed a Bill in 1949 and it was nick named the Beauty Contest Act. This Act Established New Hampshire as the First in the Nation Primary. New Hampshire rarely received attention until 1952. In 1952 New Hampshire started to receive attention as well as media coverage. New Hampshire receives so much attention and is so important because we are small a plus, close to media outlets like Boston, and we participate. These are the things that make New Hampshire so important. We are the Litmus test for the rest of nation. We pride ourselves on knowing and meeting our candidates and asking them the important questions. This makes the New Hampshire experience that much more important to the nation.

I wonder how much attention we're going to see in the elections to come now that so many other states are moving their primaries up. Sure, we're still going to be first... but with gigantic primaries like California just a week or so after us I think most candidates would be better off spending their time and money in the big states. We'll see what happens.
